"Spitex" is short for "spitalexterne Hilfe und Pflege" (out-of-hospital help and care). It refers to the care and support of people in their own homes who need assistance after an accident, illness, or due to age or disability. Spitex services enable these people to receive qualified care from trained specialists in their own living environment.
Public Spitex organisations work on behalf of municipalities or cantons and are also financed by them. They have a legal duty to provide needs-based care and support. The scope of services is based on medically necessary need.
Private Spitex companies, on the other hand, can be freely chosen and are commissioned directly by clients. They are not bound by a duty of care and often offer a broader, individually adaptable range of services, but are usually profit-oriented.
SwissCare Züri combines the advantages of public and private Spitex: As a non-profit organisation without a profit motive, we work according to the recognised quality standards of Spitex Schweiz and are a member of Spitex Verband Zürich. At the same time, we are not obliged to take on every case, but can decide within our capacity how many clients we accept. This way we avoid staff shortages, deliberately forgo temporary care workers and ensure that we can continuously guarantee high care quality.
No, for clients there are no cost differences for services covered by health insurance. Regardless of whether it is a public or private Spitex, the same statutory rates apply for care services. The patient contribution is therefore identical and is regulated by the federal government.
